Burl is the knot found on tree trunks caused by disease, infection, and stress. Once the burl is cut into, it reveals a swirling rare grain pattern. It is illegal to cut burl off of a standing treeā€”the tree must come down first before the burl can be processed.

This group show features a range of artists, craftspeople, and designers willing to experiment with burl. They were each given a burl over a year ago, and given time to experiment as they see fit.
The goal of the show is to create an interior that invites our city to socialize, think about, and imagine possibilities for recycling local trees. The objects in the show incorporate a range of functional and poetic responses to thinking about the full life cycle of a tree.

RVA Urban Wood is a group that organizes events and knowledge to save local trees from the landfill. These trees can be milled and dried into usable lumber. We build connections between arborists, sawyers, fabricators, designers, and local government.

Exhibition runs through March 8, 2025
